Summer break has officially ended and I just finished teaching my first week of art classes!
We had school from Monday 8/31/26 to Thursday 9/3/26 (Friday 9/4/26 and Monday 9/7/26 -no school due to Labor Day)
All my K- 5 students started my “Finish the Picture” sheets!
They will need 1 more art class to finish, but here are some examples in progress.
I LOVE this lesson! They are coming up with some VERY creative ideas!!
I use this lesson every year (I have for the past 4 years or so) for the first day in art, for all grades K-5th. Every year I switch up the sheets, so it’s different for them each first art class of the year.
Such a great way to get the creative juices flowing again after summer break!— Low stress, easy-breezy art prompt, where there are tons of possibilities and my students LOVE doing this!
Students add to each box with pencil to turn the random lines/shapes into a picture of something! Students can turn their paper any way they want
and can start in any box they want!
I love the concept because it allows students to design whatever they want from their imagination and there is no right or wrong way to create them.
I love seeing all the possibilities! Such a fun way to start the year off!
I have my students do them after showing them my google slideshow of all the art projects we’d be creating throughout the year, and going over the rules and routines. Since there isn’t much art making time left on day 1 because of this, I continue the lesson on day 2.
If kids finish early, I give them a second sheet with different shapes and lines inside the boxes.
- Students can turn the page anyway they want
- Low stress, easy-breezy art prompt, where there are tons of possibilities!
- When you copy the sheets make them double-sided, but have kids only draw on one side, so parents can see the “before” (just the boxes with lines and shapes) and the “after” (what the student created!)
- Also a great addition for your sub binder!

And now for “the little bit of something else”…
I recently re-watched Interstellar (because if you didn’t already know from reading my previous blog posts … I’m obsessed with movies that have to do with time, or any kind of time bending / time travel situation, and I’ve always had a fascination with Science ) … and it’s been yearrrs since I’ve seen it …but…WOW …..isn’t that such a great movie! What a masterpiece!
It’s seriously one of the greatest technical achievements in cinematic history!
The visual effects of the Gargantua black hole scene is so beautiful!!
The planet “Miller” and its astronomical tidal waves scene — amazing!
And I love the conversation they have about love transcending time …and THEN the bookshelf scene in the tesseract with Cooper looking through the books at his daughter?!?
And the music is so perfect throughout the whole thing. If you haven’t seen it yet….I HIGHLY recommend!
